Samadhi Rush Episode 176// The Gunas and A Taste of Kaivalya

Yogin, this episode is super special to me. This is the work that has brought me right to my edge this year. The yoga of the gunas, the relationship of the gunas to the moon and the return to a liberated state.

What are the gunas?

The gunas (in Yoga & Sankya philosophy) are the constituents from which all things are made. They exist in all things in varying proportions all the time.

The gunas are rajas, tamas and sattva. People have been interpreting and talking about the gunas for ages. Here is my personal experience of them, using the moon and my work process as examples

  • Tamas has the potential of the new moon. It seems like nothing is happening, but all potential is vibrating here. This is the space where new ideas germinate.
  • Rajas has the energy of the waxing moon. Endeavoring toward fullness. In project management, rajas is where the work is being planned and often while it is actually being created.
  • Sattva has the sweetness of the day after the full moon. The release. The moment things click. Usually, the work is still in process, but a critical shift in the process has been reached where things aren’t so frenetic. Where the pace is more peaceful, purposeful rather than maniacal.

Oftentimes, these gunas are set up as a hierarchy (and certainly the sattvic approach is quite often the most comfortable), but our work as yogin is to find ease in each of the gunas. Once we do that, they no longer trigger us in the way they once might have. This, according to the Yoga Sutras, is Kaivalya or liberation.

This is where I have been working for the past year. In feeling into all of the gunas. Getting comfortable in the rajas of finishing a project (several, actually) in the tamas of sitting with space and the potential for anxiety with sattva (it’s real).

We’ll talk more about it soon, but here is just a taste.

LOVE you.

Breath-Centered Practice WORKS

One of the beautifully amazing things about the breath is that it is at once a cause and an effect of our current state of being.

What does that mean?

Well, think about when you’ve been mentally (or physically) stressed. For me, this is usually most obvious when I’m running late or trying to find a parking spot at the grocery store. How does the breath respond? Mine is usually short, shallow and audible. This is the breath being an effect (or evidence of) the stressed state of mind.

The breath can cause a shift in that state of being as well. Just by noticing the breath, you can change your mental state from stressed to less stressed. A couple of key techniques, and you can surf that situation like a pro.

Are you feeling it all? We’ve got a practice for that.

Samadhi Rush Episode 175// Planetary Relationship Meditation

Shimmering Stars,
I am FEELING it. All.
How about you?

Listening to the NPR program “On the Media” last week, I heard this quote that really struck a chord, “We grieve for one, we grieve for the many.” And I whole-heartedly, whole-bodily agree. From Syria to Mali to Paris to Minneapolis to Chicago and every point on the map in between, I am grieving.

And it is easy to get pulled into a spiral of despair.
How can we help? What can I do? Does what I do really matter? Will what I’m doing ever be enough?
And then the body reminds me that yes, even the tiniest shift reverberates throughout the vastness. We feel that when we lift the eyebrows or drink an especially nourishing meal. It matters.
You matter.
Thank you for all you do to affect positive change in this world. We do this through every interaction: at the post office, with our children, in the sanctum of our own thoughts.

Today’s episode of Samadhi Rush is a meditation to help us practice finding the feelings of equanimity, compassion and love. For one, for the many. Come back to these whenever you can. It matters.

These feeling-tones come to us (in the yoga context) from Yoga Sutra 1.33, which you might think of as the yoga of relationship. We’ve swum in these waters before. This is important work. Studying just how we show up in relationship to each other, ourselves, this planet… this is the work of our lives. It matters.

(More on Yoga Sutra 1.33 in this post, this one, episode 51, episode 59, episode 86, and more.)

Dedicated with much gratitude to my teachers, especially Kira Ryder, who first taught me the magic of embodied mantra.

LOVE you all.

How do you want to feel? Just Breathe.

Pranayama changed my life.
I’m not kidding.

When I began this practice, I was so anxious, I had to take a bath in order to be able to sit still. My nervous system was on overdrive. All the time. I knew I probably should be meditating, but I couldn’t even sit still for one minute.

This was back in 2001. I had been practicing (fast-moving, vigorous) asana for about 3 years, running like crazy, pushing myself hard in law school. In my heart, I knew this wasn’t sustainable, but I didn’t even know where to begin.

And there was my breath.

The pranayama practice that first pulled me in was brahmari, or the bee breath. This simple technique actually calmed my flighty self down in a major way. I stuck with it. Things got a little less fraught. I was a little less fried. Then, I found nadi shodhana, the alternate nostril breath practice. This smoothed out more edges. I used this one a LOT when I was working as a trial attorney. I even taught it to a few of my co-workers under fluorescent lights in business suits.

Attending to the breath in an organized way is one of the best decisions I ever made.

From restless to calm.
From lethargic to energized.
From bitter to grateful.
It works.

How do you want to feel?

Calm? Energized? Grateful? In love? There’s a breath for that.

Pranayama can help you get there. Seriously.

The shifts I have (and continue) to experience through my pranayama practice are huge and teeny, tiny all at once in the best kind of way.

It is with gratitude for these practices that I created my very first pranayama course for you.  Just Breathe.  YES.

Samadhi Rush Episode 174// Lovingkindness Practice

Dearest Beloved Yoga Family,

Sending you all the love in the world, sweeties. This week has been hard. All of the cracks in our planetary-relationship-vessel are being revealed to us. And I am feeeeeeeling it. And at the same time, I feel so overwhelmed with gratitude for my current situation and lucky in a way that I really and truly never have before. And also like I want to do more, but do not know where to begin. When I feel this way, practicing the metta, or lovingkindness, meditation helps.
