Samadhi Rush Episode 144// Ditching the Addiction to Agony and Ecstacy

This is an open-level hatha class recorded live at Yoga Refuge, where I teach on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon. Oona was with me, so you’ll hear a little chirp from her here and there.

We talk about how life is yoga. How the practice may not change circumstances, but it is a powerful vehicle for the change of US. One of the ways our practice changes us is by inviting us to pay attention. Attention, curiosity, even the depths of objective observation have a way of lessening the grip that our patterned addictions to the memories of pleasure and pain. These two addictions are described in yoga philosophy among the Kleshas (obstacles, or categories of suffering) as Raga (attachment to pleasure) and Dvesa (attachment to pain). The other Kleshas are Avidya (literally, “not seeing clearly” or blindness to one’s own true nature), Asmita (attachment to the stories constructed by ego about one’s nature) and Abhinivesa (attachment to the status quo). All of these originate in Avidya.
